I would suggest changing the joker valve. They tend to start staying partially open after a while. It's quick and economical and a good place to start.

Backflow

It's the Joker valve and/or it's a Jabsco( they all do it).

I would also check your waste tank vent line. If the vent line is clogged, you are actually "pressurizing" the tank when pumping the head. The "pressure" has no where to escape...so it will work its way back to the head and possibly cause the problem you are experiencing.

Both my slip neighbor and I had the same problem with backflow. Both changed the valve and all is okay. We don't know how or why, but looking at the timeline, we suspect the city pumpout barge has alot of suction and somehow whacked the joker. Batman would have been so proud.

That would be impossible because, unless the tank vent is blocked, the pumpout would only pull in air through the vent line. But even if it did pull air through the toilet, it would be pulling in the the direction that the joker valve is aimed, so it could not damage it.

Replacing the joker valve--which should be done annually as routine preventive maintenance anyway--blocks the backflow, but only till the new joker valve becomes slightly worn...so it's just a band-aid, not the real cure.

The real cure: learn to flush longer in the dry mode. Any toilet that's working anywhere near factory specs can move bowl contents up to 6 linear feet or 4 vertical feet in the dry mode...so if you don't leave anything in the line, nothing can run back into the toilet.

Peggie, I am reading these backflow issues which is what happened to me this weekend. In fact the bowl fill up several time and almost over flowed. We normally pump in the dry mode about 20 times but I still get some back flow. This weekend we had some strong winds and stayed healed over pretty good all day. Several times I had to pump the bowl down to insure it did not over flow. I will recheck the vent to insure it is clear. What and where is the joker valve? Any other thoughts thanks.

If you are suspecting the vent, you can take off the deck cap (to use the pumpout hose as a "sort of" vent to release pressure) and see if that clears the problem... then it's the real vent that is suspect.

Bowl filling with water... you sure the water inlet valve is being closed after each use ? could be siphoning in water.
