I'm buying a new nissan outboard. I have a choice between 8 and 9.8 HP ( couple of hundred $ difference). Should I go with the 9.8 or the 8 is plenty for my H22 ? I might upgrade in the future to a 25 ft boat. I heard the 9.8 is very powerfull

Eight Is More Than Enough

A six actually would do it very well. All that extra HP will get you is more weight on the stern and more gas used. Even later on the 9.8 would be more than what the 25'er would need the 8 would work nicely there.

honda outboard

I'm interested in a bigger motor. Currently have a 6hp Johnson short shaft for my Hunter 240. But it's underpowered and lifts out of the water in waves. Can get a good Honda 8hp long shaft 4 stroke second hand at a very reasonable price. How much heavier are the 4 stroke? Would it make a big difference when towing? Advice would be appreciated.

Try Nissan

A nissan 8hp or 9.8hp two stroke is 26Kg. The 4 stroke is 52Kg. Four stroke are heavy. Honda is good but expensive. Nissan (made by Tohatsu) are as good and cheaper. The cheapest I found is at http://www.porta-bote.com/nissan.htm They sell the 8hp 2stroke $1245 no tax free shipping and the 9.8hp 2 stroke $1425 Worth to check into it. Happy sailing

free delivery?

Eric Reckon I could get free delivery? The difference in weight between the 2 and 4 stroke is about 16 kg. (28 kg and 44 kg) Would the bracket hold this on the 240? What about the effect for towing?

the expert will answer

The 22 and 240 max on engines is really a 8 hp but the 9.8 Nissan and Tohatsu will also work. That engine is the same block as the 8 hp but with the carbureation beefed up. Do not consider a 9.9 fo any kind as it is over powered for the two boats. As for the new 216, it is rated only for a four hp. For the record, Tohatsu and Nissan are the same engines. Even the small Mercury engines are built by Tohatsu but with a few changes for example fuel hook ups. Also Tohatsu parts are used in other engines as well.
