I spent a day on the Rachel Carson watching her give a class from the UMCES Horn Point facility an introduction to oceanography. This is the first time I have actually seen her work.

After return to Solomons, I reconnected all of the bilge and fuel systems so Strider is fully functional again. There is something that makes me slightly nervous about heading out on another boat leaving mine without a functioning bilge pump system. I was glad to see here when we got back.

I still need to have the engine work done but I have 150 hours to do it according to the manual so I have the lightness of being of feeling free to depart if need or whim require.

BTW the Rachel Carson is on Facebook. Search for "Rachel Carson Research Vessel"

Here are pictures of the day:

Sunrise about an hour after departing Solomons:

Backing into the Horn Point dock:

Loading the CTD and other gear:

Preparing the Bongo net for plankton sampling:

Deploying the net:

Preparing for a CTD cast:

No docklines are used for short stops such as unloading. The vessel's dynamic positioning system holds her tight to the dock with side thrust.

About to dock after return to Solomons with Sultana and Strider on the wharf "T":

It was a great day on the bay up north too. Thanks for the photo journalism.

Hi Roger,
Drove by yesterday but decided not to park illegally to walk down on the dock. What are the students testing for with the CTD? The Calvert Marine Museum had quite a lot of info on the health of the bay. Didn't you help your son years ago with a similar project?

That is a tiny CTD they use.
Yes, and we used an even smaller CTD. Strider has been a research vessel so it is even more appropriate for her to be at this dock.
