I recently looked at a 1989 h23. ( for sale) To my amazement, the back stays attached to the transom with a small rectangular tang about 1/2" wide. There was a single phillips head screw at the bottom. I could not board and inspect for myself, so am asking y'all. Is this the correct point of attachment??

H23 Backstay

Hi Rich - My 86 H23 has a split backstay with 2 attachments basically as you describe. This is on the Kenyon rig.

H23 Backstay

Yes it is a split back stay. The tang just looked woefully small for the job. This boat has a tapered mast ( US Spars I believe) It is really intriguing me because it is equiped w/spinaker. The asking price is 4,800. Thanks for the reply. I think this is my next boat. Rich

Crazy aint it?

But I would like to add a queston. Does anyone think the its strang that the tangs bend up too high? Mine basiclly point straight up and don't line with the stays. I'm thinking about straightening them in the bench vise a little bit, but I don't want to weaken them. I wouldn't think much about it but they disfigure the keyrings that hold the pins in. She comes home this weekend. Sad days ahead.

Alignment

I would bend them to line up with the stays. Ours are lined up and bent at that angle. We have the Kenyon mast. Rob Morton S/V Euphoria

Backstay support

I went out and looked at the backstay support and I think that shaft runs back to the "tab" for the backstay. They have sealed this up quite well so you can't see the shaft the whole way. I don't see how just one screw would support that. Rob
