Back flow into the bowl.

Peggy, It seems that when I pump the head, it doesn't seem to empty completely. I only flush with fresh water with the switch in the dry position, I rarely open the raw water intake. When I close the boat for the week, I place a few cupfuls of fresh water in the bowl along with a few ounces of C.P. Upon my return, the bowl contains a little more than I left behind when I closed up. Time for a rebuild? Thanks. John

What I suspect:

1. There's at least a partial uphill run in your head discharge hose. 2. It's been at least 2 years--if not a lot longer--since the joker valve in your toilet was replaced. If I'm right, the solution to your problem is: 1. Replace the joker valve. 2. Pump long enough in the dry mode to move the bowl contents all the way to the tank...or at least over the top of any loop in the line. 1. Replace the joker valve. 2. Flush long enough in the dry mode to move bowl contents all the way to the tank. There is a 3rd possibility...your tank vent may be blocked or partially blocked, pressurizing the system...whic would not let bowl contents move through the system. However, a blocked vent would also make it very difficult to pump out the tank because the pumpout would pull a vacuum, preventing it from pulling very much out. So unless your tank isn't emptying at the rate it used to, I think you can rule that one out.

Our system is one year old. On first use this season, it is behaving as described - including a difficult initial antifreeze pumpout. The vent appears to have an insect screen attached. Is there an easy way to clean a vent hose? Thank you.

Knock the screen out

If it hasn't rusted out already, it will soon. Meanwhile, it's far likely to become clogged with dust, pollen and any waste that spills into the vent when you're heeled than any insects that might crawl into the thru-hull. Each time you pump out and/or wash the boat, backflush the vent to keep it clear.
