B361 third reef line

My B361 has ports on the luff end of the boom to allow 2 reef lines, but not a third, despite there being an available sheave at the leech. Don't really want to drill out another port on the luff as I'm concerned about compromised the strength of the fitting. Is there any reason I shouldn't install cheek blocks on exterior (side) of the boom and rig a third line that way?

I have 2 and it is sufficient. I have been in 46 knots wind and it worked fine.

Hm. Good to hear... I’ve found so far (she’s fairly new to me) that at 25kn I have both main reefs in and a couple in the genny to keep her light on the helm. The usual playing with traveller and sheet. Any other tips?

At 25kts you shouldn’t need a 3rd reef in the main, but you may need to get rid of a lot of that mast-head genoa. I looked all this over when I purchased the Oceanis 411, thought I may need a 3rd reef. What I found is - the second reef is so deep I don’t need anything more in winds up into the +40 kt range. At that point, I’m making for a port. If your B361 actually requires a 3rd reef I suggest you have your sailmaker attach the required reefing cheek blocks and plan on reeving your 1st reef to the third as the conditions require. That procedure is relatively simple. But back to heavy weather concerns - focus on what you are going to do with all that fore-sail. I use the ATN Gale Sail and find that it does a pretty good job of balancing the boat.

One other thing to consider is a new main built with heavier cruising cloth and more reinforcement. Neil Pryde can dial you in. Boat Show is Coming...and NP will be there.

Ports? You mean two holes that are smoothed out for the feed up to the sail? If yours is like mine, that is. I have 4 sheaves slots up from the bottom of the boom. Do you have a US Spars mast/boom #?

Yes, two holes that allow the line to go up from the forward sheaves. 4 sheaves total. Don’t have a # off hand but have never looked for one. Where would I find it.

The boom is probably at the front end. The mast should be somewhere you'd read it standing up. I/m thinking like a thin alluminum piece engraved with the numbers. I can recheck it tomorrow.

If its a US spars rig:
Mast, just above eye level starboard side.
Boom, forward end starboard side
