When you induce bending in the mast you will be pulling the top of the mast aft. In order to allow for movement you must loosen the forestay. Make it easy on yourself. Loosen the forestay and make sure as you induce bending that the forestay does not become so tight as to effect what you are doing which is bending the mast and moving the top aft. As a safety measure when I did it I also secured the jib halyard to the bow cleat and left it a little slack. Fair winds and following seas, Charlie
