I recently purchased a C-27 with an awl-grip hull (painted in 1993) it is blue and is showing signs of fade. How do I bring the blue hull back to its nice shine? I was told you can not simpley wax awel-grip is this true?

Awlgripped hull

We recently bought a 40.5 which was awlgripped last year so not much experience but I can relate what we have been told. Don't us wax - there is an acrylic sold under the name Awlcare which is much easier to apply and will supposedly better protect the paint, and be real careful with using solvents around the boat which will damage the paint. If it has already lost its shine, I'm not sure whatr to suggest other than I'd try the Awlcare first as it is alot cheaper than other options I can think of and won't require the periodic maintenance necessary with other acrylics such as Polygrip. Good luck Don S/V Illusion

Scott: Check out this excerpt from the Island Girl Products Site: "Freshening dulled paintwork: Painted stripes or lettering that have started to go dull and chalky may be wiped over very briefly with ISLAND GIRL Pink? to remove the chalk. Then neutralize with water and restore gloss with SILKENSEAL? and/or Superwax ?. Alternatively, MH Superglaze? can be used directly to both remove oxidation and restore brilliant shine. Sometimes very brief wiping over with SEA GLOW ? is more suitable to restore and brighten the color of single-part painted surfaces (e.g. lettering and stripes, the inside throat of cowl vents). Then immediately neutralize with water and restore gloss with SILKENSEAL? and/or Superwax ? or (alternatively) MH Superglaze?" If you have any questions, contact Jim at www.islandgirlproducts.com

no quick fix

There is no quick fix for bringing the shine back on your boat, never coat your boat with these products that guarantee a shine that will last for a year, the shine will last for about a week or two and then make a mess of your paint. Awl Grip is a great paint, very durable if it was applied correctly. We have been restoring paint jobs and gelcoat for years and it takes great patience and time by wet sanding carefully, compounding and buffing, a few months ago we restored an 11 year old paint job and a 16 year old gelcoat job, both boats look brand new, you can see yourself in the finish standing 5 feet away. 9 yo Awlgrip

This according to the "Hinckley Guide to Yacht Care:" "Linear polyurethane paints (Awlgrip is such a paint ) should last at least 5 years." Maybe you're just overdue. Paul
