Hi we just bought a 34' Columbia Mark II. and we want to put a new coat of paint on it. From what I am reading the way to go it with either Awlgrip or Imron. Who has had any experiance with these, and did you brush or spray it on. From what I read you can brush on awlgrip I am just wondering what kind of finsh you get. Any help would be appreciated. Just Inquired

Scott - I just posted the same thread with little response about a week ago - painting my mast though. Imron works well and is easier to apply but dangerous to handle unless you have the right equip. (forced air-respirator). I once sprayed a small ski-boat with Imron outside on a windy day and had no problems w/ fumes....I only used a face-mask. Dangerous though and would not recommend that. Awlgrio requires a few extra steps but to my understanding is a harder finish. That said, I would go with Awlgrip....spraying is the best but you can roll-n-tip too! Good luck - Rob

Another Alternative

Interlux has a new product called Perfection (really, I didn't make this name up) that they claim is made for the amateur boat painter. It is supposed to be able to be rollered / brushed on and is (again) easier to use than either AwlGrip or Imron. It is a two part polyurethane, so it should last a long time. Check out their website Steve Alchemist C-320 p.s. one reason that you might not have gotten much response earlier is that you requested that only people who had actual experience respond. Most of us haven't painted our boats yet.

I can say the Imron is Great

I used Imron to repaint the boot stripe on my Cheoy Lee Clipper in 1979. It still looked new in 2004. Great product. I preped the boat myself and had a good auto body paint guy who was use to spraying Imron do the job. It went on so well he insisted on doing 5 coats of it. I had heard it chips easy but I was not easy on it through the years and no problems at all.

Thanks

Thanks for all the replys and keep them coming. Anyone have any idea the number of gallons required to do a 34' topsides and deck? Scott
