Hey All

Saturday was the second shakedown cruise for my new-2-me Balboa 26. All went well this time. A few weeks ago my daughter helped me buff out the hull and she hung her head over the side and snapped this pic. She caught it just right. I'm a little embarassed because I left the "tick-tack" hanging overboard but it is a nice pic.

And I always like looking at sailing pics so... if you got some to share, please do.

Nice blue topsides! ... I like ... motoring with your fenders out is bad enough, but sailing?!?!? (Well, on my first sail of the season yesterday I forgot to release the topping lift until I finally looked up to see what was snagging the end of a batten.

Wow, that's some shine! :yeah:

But sailing with your fenders out?

I've got my little motor-sailer in the Erie Canal right now, with the mast hanging off my garage ceiling, but in the canal it's perfectly acceptable to leave the tick-tacks handing all around the boat, as long as their not dragging in the water. That's based, of course, on the observation that just about every boat in the canal has fenders hanging. Good thing, as it's hard to move around that boat with no mast to hang on to. ;)

But the big question is, how does she sail?

I guess as you get older you stop caring more and more about nonsense. What is wrong with sailing with your fenders out?

Per his opening post, rgranger did acknowledge his fender faux-pas.

rgranger: Really great picture actually. Maybe you can photo-shop the fender out of the picture?

I did that to a picture taken of my boat. Reason: - For my day outings, I do stow away the aft fenders. But the forward fenders which are quite large, I instead pull them up onto the deck, and wedge them firmly between my shrouds and cabin top, still tied to the stanchions. Saves a bit of time/effort on each day sail. But the big black fender on the deck sure ruined the overall look of my boat when the picture was taken. So I photo-shopped it out. And then over-layed an "impressionist" style to it. Attached.

Great pic Rob!
Whenever I forget the fenders I blame it on the dog. From the look on his face I'm pretty sure he'd flip me off if he could.

Funny how those free floating rogue bumpers will hang up in the middle of the water like a mooring ball and split the current like that, aint it?

My Fenders are out full time...no big deal. I have two Caribiners on them, one for hanging them at the dock/water line to do their job and the other caribiner is attached right at the loop on the end of the fender. To bring them up I just lift the line and hook the caribiner onto the life line, they are still hanging but just at a much higher height, right up on the life line. When it comes time to dock I just unhook the top caribiner and let the fender drop down to the water/dock level. So I guess my fenders are always hanging out there in plain view. It likely only bothers other people, never bothers me. If others don't like it, they don't have to look at it. Live and let live.

Some psychologist could write a thesis based just upon forum threads. Funny but I really wanted to start a thread about cool pictures... go figure that my off-comment about my bumper would get the traction .... but you see this sort of thing all the time. It really is interesting...

Yep, I'm sure I never would have noticed the fender, but you flagged it in your opening remarks! I was focused on the perfect reflection of the lone cloud and the shoreline in the distance.

In case my point missed, the whole "rogue bumper" thing was a poorly formulated attempt at saying "What a nice finish on that hull!".

Great pic. Who cares about the fender... I just like that you're so pumped about your boat to post a picture of her like that. That blue hull looks gorgeous! Seriously considering that for mine when it's time for a re-paint.

Thanks... and yes I got it. I just found it interesting that the bumper became the theme of the thread... not surprised... just interested. :)

First I pressure washed the hull to get off the grit etc.

I got one of those $20 electric orbital buffers from the car section at WalMart and some polishing compound. Then I wiped on the compound with a paper towel while my daughter buffed behind me... We then followed up with a roll of paper towels and wiped off the buffing compound. I was honestly surprised at how well it worked and how easy it was. The buffing compound wiped off blue so it definitely took the paint down a bit. So I guess I'd suggest just trying it first and see how your oxidized paint looks after a good buff. I got that shine after less than an hour of work. So give your oxidized paint two or three buffs. Maybe????? I think you would know if it is worth a second buff after the first... or just try a small spot and see if it looks better before you go after the entire hull.

I then waxed it. I think it looked a little better before the wax. Little bits of wax got caught in any depressions and left white "pockets".

Nice shine - really. :theman:

ah hem

All of the sail boats on our lake always run around with thier fenders on - because not a one of them stays out after sunset.
We always anchor out for days on end so the fenders come in.

But; can't tell how many times we've come to a quick dock and forgot to put out fenders

When we got our 1st sailboat, I didn't release the topping lift for the 1st 3 or 4 weeks we owned it. I finally figured it out when I was researching why I couldn't sail upwind to save my life. OK, I admitted it, and you guys thought leaving a fender on was a big deal :)
