Avon 280

I've got an Avon 280 and like it a lot. I have a 4hp Yamaha 4 stroke engine and it will plane with me, but with two people it needs a larger engine. I have not had much experience rowing, but I think for 100 to 200 feet it should be just fine. The center keel does help keep it aligned. I have had mine since 04 and it has held up very well on Kentucky Lake.

Moves boat good

The 4HP moves it very good with as many as four adults. I don't use the seat - lost it the first month! We sit on the rim. It's not real fast with 4 adults, but gets them back and forth to shore very adequately. The weight is about 58 pounds if my memory is correct and I use an Ocean Marine hoist system to lower it to the dingy. I can do it single handed and use only one hand to lower the motor. I think the 4 HP moves the boat more than fast enough - also it has a built in fuel tank that will last about 45 minutes at cruise power. I would recommend it.

I have a mercury marine inflatable also with inflatable floor and keel, but have owned many other inflatables throughout my life. Main characteristics that you should be aware of are the facts that not only do inflatables not row well, they dont row at all. With the slightest head breeze, you will get pretty much nowhere. The other thing is HP rating. Avon recommends 4-10HP range with 4HP being the minimum whuch means barely adequate. At first you think you will use the dink as a tender, but in actually, IF you have a decent motor, you will find yourself playing in the dink quite a bit. When we are anchored out, we use the dink to spend a day or 2 exploring and even use it around our area quite a bit. Dinks are fun, lots of fun, not just an item of practicality. Generally speaking, I would remain in the recommended mid-range HP area like in the 6 -8 HP. Most of the time you will probably not be able to plane with a 4. Not just lousey fuel economy, but not fun either just hogging down. Once you buy the O/B, its too late to change your mind. Also keep in mind, that you are not on a lake, you will probably be in the L.I. Sound and the Atlantic. The selection od an inflatable is the best choice, but thats another story. IMHO Tony B

i had a 3 hp on my rover. it would move the boat to the shore and back and we made some long trips with it. the day we put the 8hp on it everything changed. we were able to explore some places we would not have ever tried with the smaller engine. but for weight and just going from boat to shore and back the 3 would do. rowing against tide or wind is not for the weak (smiley face)
