We just purchased a boat here in florida. We've been told if we register it in deleware and store it in georgia till we need it next winter...we can avoid sales tax. This is very appealing..does anyone know of a downside...jim

In PA.

If you buy a boat in another State, Pennsylvania wants to know if you paid tax on it there. If you did not, they want the tax upon registering. r.w.landau

Yes I do.

Sounds like a lot of trouble to go to to save a few bucks and you then get to look over your shoulder for the tax man for the rest of your ownership-cheapo!

Hey Ben...

Depending on what boat and what state, it's NOT a few bucks. If they spent 20k on a boat and had to pay 5% sales tax, thats $1000! Now, without getting into the politics of taxation, there's nothing illegal about what he's concidering. He's just circumventing the current redtape and using loopholes. It's hardly Jim's fault that the states all have differing laws and that those laws allow him to do it. He'd be an idjut not to use em! He's not doing anything diffrent from any other person that knows the laws or can afford an accountant and lawyer to save them massive amounts of money on taxes. Heh. SO GO FOR IT! (Only if it's all legal) Josh

Fl Reg/ tax

Florida also requires proof of paid taxes. If the boat is used on the waters of Florida for 90 days or more, Florida requires the boat to be registered in Florida. You keep the out of state reg. but get a Florida reg. decal. This goes for documented vessels also.
