Does anyone have an idea of the average cost of a sail cover for a 33.5 (1992) Hunter. My husband thinks we can have one made for a couple hundred dollars or less. We have the original threadbare cover, so we have the pattern. We would like to use sunbrella, but can go for something different. I've gotten quotes from 450 to over 700. We have looked at the SBO site for sail covers. Thanks in advance for your input.

Hi Barb, different model than yours and west coast here. A few years ago I had a dodger, bimini and mainsail cover replacement made with sunbrella fabric for $1,400. Very pleased with the results. Another local outfit wanted $3,000 for just the dodger replacement. Hard to say what the average cost leans towards, but this SBO site should be able to give you a fair price for a quality product.

A couple of hundred dollars is probably wishful thinking. Using good quality materials I would say $500 would be the low end. My wife has made several and it takes more labor than you think. Professional use sewing machines which put a home machine to shame. On the borders you may be sewing through 4 or more layers of tough fabric. If you can't fine a friend who has a good machine and enjoys doing this I would look to a local sailmaker who can make short work of it. The canvas guys tend to be expensive because they are used to doing design and fabrication of dodgers, cockpit enclosures, screens, binimi's etc. They get premium prices for that - and deserve it. But they do covers at dodger rates.

Sailrite.com has instructions for DIY canvas projects including a mainsail cover. In any case, if you don't request the high quality thread the cover's top seam will quickly deteriorate.

Cabinet catch for many Hunters

These catches were common on Hunters from the Legend-era through today's Marlow-Hunters. We keep a large stock on hand for emergency shipments or just getting spares.

thanks, Dave. I was looking on that site and found it very reasonable, given what I know so far.
