Autoprop for a 3GM30

Would like to hear if anyone has had any experience with the Autoprop on a Yanmar 3GM30. My understanding of this prop is that it adjusts its pitch to match the torque/speed characterictics of the engine, thereby extracting max power from the engine at all RPMs. This should allow cruising at a higher speed at a lower rpm than attainable with a fixed prop. Anybody have any comments??

I love mine!

I don’t know about that engine but I love my Auto-prop on my XP25 (‘88 C30). I can back out of my slip and turn port or starboard. I cruise at 5.5 knots at 1900 RPM. The stopping power of this prop is great. I can stop from cruise in less than 40 ft.

I'm Curious, there, Hayden...

Autoprop has been spec'ing 14 and 15" props for the C30, and from what I've read, people are sending them back due to increased vibration from the decreased blade-hull clearance or interference with the strut when they reverse. What size did you fit, and did you have either of the above problems?

Thanks for your reply Hayden, but..

coould you tell me a little bit more in your case. If you can cruise at 5.5 knots at 1900 rpm, what would be the max rpm that you can run at full throttle and what is the max rpm rating of your engine? Also, what size diameter prop do you have? Thanks again, Ernie

To tell the truth I don’t know what size prop I have. The prop came with the boat when I bought it so I have nothing to compare it with. I do know that the engine doesn’t like curtain Rpm’s. My engine is a Universal XP25. Dead idle will loosen fillings. A touch above idle doesn’t ripple my coffee. 1750 is rough. 1900 is smooth as silk. 2200 is rough and loud. 2400 is relatively smooth but still loud. I have run at 2800, didn’t like it. I didn't get any black smoke. I have never checked the engine at WOT. I will check it next time out. I used to drive interstate semi and the sound of a diesel engine running at close to 3000 Rpm’s is just too scary. I’m used to 2000 max at the governor) Hayden Watson “Papillon” 88 C30 tr/bs Spokane, WA
