I have a new to me ST 4000. When the system is disengaged, my wheel makes a terrible squeeking noise, kind of like plastic on metal (or plastic on plastic). I went to the Raymarine website and downloaded the 80 page manual...it does a good job on installation and operating the system, but no item like this in the troubleshooting section. In prior posts I see that Raymarine isn't the greatest in customer service, so I thought I would try here first. Anybody experience something like this? Would using a dry lube spray possibly help?

a wine?

Does it sound/feel the same as if you steer with it engaged but on stand-bye? If so, then the belt may be new or tight and even though it is disengaged, it isn't disengaged from the motor. If not, then it must be that the belt is just slightly tight on the inner ring. It will wear into a good fit with use.

I think you may be on the issue. It definately feels tighter /harder to steer (with the pilot turned off) than a regular wheel would be without an auto pilot....I will have to compare to the feel with the pilot engaged and on standby. Thanks for your thoughts.

My WP32 has a clutch...

Does the Raymarine also have a clutch? When mine is engaged, it is hard to turn by hand.

I think Franklin is right on the money. Sounds like the belt is slipping when you have it disengaged and turn it by hand. Mine makes that same sound if not totally disengaged. Should get better as soon as it wears in a little bit.

Grinding ST4000+

My autohelm sounds kind of grindy as it operates and it is a little worse than others I have heard. I have given up worrying about it. Seems to work fine. Not having a sound file I cannot tell just how bad your sound is. If you could attach a sound file to this site, that would indeed be helpful. This model of Autohelm is not very rugged. The quadrant-mounted unit would be better but a new headsail comes first.

The clutch on the whell on mine has two positions. If you flip it to the first stop you will think its disengaged, but it isn't. Make sure its all the way over.

Check the adjusting not by the clutch lever

There is an adjusting nut very near to the clutchlever that can and should be adjusted. That should solve your problem. When the nut is adjusted properly and the clutch lever is completely disengaged, the wheel should turn freely with no noise. I have replaced every part of my ST 4000 over the last 5 years, including the flux gate compass, the control head and the wheeldrive, fyi. Good luck Patrick
