H28 and used it for two years. I installed the fluxgate compass on the aft stateroom bulkhead just beneath the pedestal well. Ran the wire through the plywood bulkhead into the transom locker and used the existing wiring run from there to the instrument head that I mounted on the starboard coaming. Worked great. I would do it again.Terry
I installed the Simrad WP30 and it works great. With this autopilot you don't have to cut any holes in your boat. It also connects directly to my Garmin GPS (176C) and lets the autopilot steer the boat. Try to get a free remote. When sitting on the bow seat with the remote you feel like you have the biggest but slowest jet ski in the world. steve
It's a little old and they don't make them anymore, but the WP5000 mounts the same. It has been good to me so far. I can hook in wind instruments or a GPS to steer with. I also have the remote, which is fun to sit on the foredeck and control your boat.
Simrad was selling the WP5000 as of last year. These units seem to last forever. We have a WP300CX (Navico unit) now the Simrad WP30 and it was an easy install. If you go through the archives you will find very few owners that have been dissatisfied with the Simrad/Navico products (there have been a few). We just had this discussion within the last 2 months. There are several dissatisfied owners of the Autohelm products. You need to keep in mind that Autohelm has probably outsold the Navico/Simrad units by many times over so the level of dissatisfaction is naturally going to be somewhat higher.Regardless of what you you purchase care must be taken to ensure that there is not any interference with the the fluxgate compass. The Simrad compass is in the cockpit. The Autohelm units are usually mounted below deck. They are suppose to mounted on the centerline which can sometimes be a problem.Regardless of what unit you get, you will find that it will be one of the better investments that you purchase for your boat.
I have used a simrad on my old boat, no problems. I have a st4000 on new boat, many problems. The Navman products look to be very good, based out of NZ, and southern ocean tested.
I have an '88 28.5 and we added a ST3000 about 8 years ago. Works great! I mounted the fluxgate compass on the cockpit wall on the port side of the helm (it is on the centerline and out of the way, yet easy to set/adjust from the helm.
Just got a WP30 and I love it. I did have an st4000 on my last boat. The WP was easy to install, no big holes and the remote ( wire ) control is too sweet to be believed. I have the remote in a cockpot locker and I can run the wire all the way to the anchor locker of my H34. The only flaw is that the controls are not red and green ( they are at night ) which can be confusing at times. I bought it on sailnet.Chriscboland@chealthpartners.com
There is not enough clearance to put it on a h28.5. I installed a WP5000 on my h280 in Jan of 2003 and it works great. I just traded in the boat without the WP-5000. If you want a great deal on a nearly new WP5000, email me. harryc@nc.rr.com
