Don

I am considering purchasing a new S1 wheel pilot to replace the old ST4000. Has anyone done this on a 35.5 and is it a good fit? Thanks in advance, Don

I have the Autohelm ST 4000 on my boat. I have no plans to replace it. What is the reason that you are thinking about replacement?

Frustrated

Alan, I have been fixing it for 2 years and I just think it is done. It works intermittently which is also hard to figure out - I really don't know which part of it is failing. I am a cruiser, not a racer and as I sail with my wife 90% of the time and she has little interest I basically single hand. I want something reliable as well. I use it when I set and douse the cruising spin and when it doesn't work its a problem. Regards Don

Understand

Sounds like you've got one of those intermittent electrical problems. More than likely a poor connection at one of the twist lock fittings. Have you tried checking the connections with an ohms meter?

Not on a 35.5...

But I just got finished putting a brand new S1 in a 33. Haven't had it out on the water to finish calibration or test it yet, probably a couple of weekends wait on that yet. If you're not in a rush, I can post back when I get a chance to evaluate it better and let you know what I think. Shouldn't be too dissimilar to a 35.5. It was about a two day job putting it in (didn't have an auto-pilot mounted before, so all sensors had to have mounts fabricated from scratch) and it was problematic in parts... mounting the rudder sensor in a reasonable place on the quadrante, particularly. YMMV, this was on an older ('77) model. Without my very skinny girlfriend, probably never would have gotten it done, as I don't think I could have fit in the transom where one would have to be to get everything screwed in properly. On the whole I was happy with the mounting instructions and quality of the equipment, and it plugged right in and went to work with my existing ST60 instrumentation.

Loan Request for Scott

Don and I have been talking about this installation task as I currently have an S1 in transit from Defender for a ST4000 changeout on my H35. Can we borrow your skinny girlfriend?? :)

Well...

Perhaps now that the Canadian dollar is at par we can come to some arrangement. ;)
