Fellow Hunter Owners, I'd like some advice on what would be the best autopilot to install on my 2001 Hunter 260. It's equipped with the Edson wheel steering system. Thanks JR

Couple of choices!

JR: You have a couple of choices. The most popular by far is the Autohelm Wheel Pilot by RayMarine. The other popular unit which in my opinion is the easiest to install is the Simrad WP10/WP30 units. The Simrad unit is the same as the old Navico WP100/WP300 units. They are all self contained. You just need to mount the unit to the wheel and run the cable down the pedestal to a connection block. Then you hook up the wires to your power (same power source that you would use for any of your instruments.

Vote for Autohelm Raymarine

JR I installed the Autohelm last spring and have not stop loving yet. I sail the Chespeake and if the wind is just right we can sail for 10 miles without changing a thing. ( of course dodging a few boats). If you have the knowledge go ahead and install it yourself. Last spring I installed the pedestal guard, instrument pod and autopilot. Picture is of the just completed work. The autopilot is slaved into the Garmin GPS so if I get real lazy.... Jim S/V Java

Autohelm recommendation w/picture

Jim, Thanks for all the input. I just heard that SIMRAD is doing a recall on the Wheelpilot 10/30 units. I may go with the Raymarine approach. Regards, JR Larsen

Aren't recalls free?

Dan: I would consider a recall something that the vendor is going to do for free. If you unit is out of warranty you pay for it! I do not have any idea on how many of these units ever had this problem.

Sail Expo

Steve, We are going to Sail expo. Adrianne took the entire week off for it (that's scary). Actually, our 356 is supposed to deliver just before the show, and if so, will be the show 356. If we are lucky, all the gear will be installed by then also. A trip up to the delta would most likely occur over that last weekend in June but before the 4th. We will see, that might move between now and then. And just to stay on the thread here, it will have a Raytheon 4000 autopilot. Dan and Adrianne (S/V Feije)

Simrad WP10

I have a Simrad on my 1999 H260 and chose it for because it is self contained, easier installation. It has served me well, so far. My previous boat had a Navico (now Simrad) tiller pilot which served well for many years. Fair winds, Tom
