My autopilot has worked fine for a year since new. Now, every time I hit "auto" the wheel immediately turns to port about 30 degrees. Nothing new has been placed near the compass. It's a Raymarine ST6001. I've tried to recalibrate but that did not solve the problem. Raymarine support is saying that I need to send in both the compass and computer for repair. Any thoughts?

I had the same problem

The equipment was about 9 months old and I was able to deliver the boat to the broker. The problem was the computer which was replaced with a different model. Problem solved and tested for just over one year.

That Raymarine ST is a good unit. As far as the reinitializing goes, I had to do that to one in Mexico once, but it was not working at all; that did the trick though. We installed the entire unit once, brackets fittings et al, and after the initial process it worked...'while traveling north...' but a change of course and it started doing a manuver like you described. The problem turned out to be that the flux-gate was too close to the heavy steel of the engines. Moving the flux-gate forward one foot solved the problem. All brackets, bolts and support of the gear must be tight with nylocks! ON several the flux-gate-compass WAS the problem. Take care of "Otto" he's the best crew ya got...;-)

Same Problem with our 3 year old 6001

I sent our 3 year old unit to Raymarine on a Monday by next day Fedex and I had it back on the boat Friday afternoon. It turned out that the compass was fine but a board in the SG1 core pack had to be replaced and the software upgraded... Cost $00.00… Very fast turn around... Great customer support!!!!!!!!!! I think it is the compass can pop off it mount and make the A/P turns one way.You can open the rear cover and look ,it will also rattle around inside like its broken.I just clip it back on and its fine. John

Connections

I had the same problem. Turned out to be loose connections behind the control head for the compass wires. Tightened the connections (slip connectors) and every thing was OK.
