I have been looking for an autopilot for our Hunter Vision 36. I have resigned myself to the fact that we cannot use a wheel pilot of any type. This forces us into the use of a below deck unit. I assume that these units will actually mount inside the console. If anyone has any pictures and suggestions for mounting one of these units, I would appreciate it. I assume that the H'37.5 would also be similar. Any suggestions as to the brand would also be helpful.

I have a wheel pilot and a H 37.5

not real sure why you can't use a wheel pilot. If you have a pedistal type helm you should be able to use one. Way do you think you can't use one?

my mistake!

The Hunter Vision has a console type pedestal. There is not a traditional round post to attach anything to. There is very little clearnance between the wheel & the console itself.

The RayMarine St 4000

fit my console pedestal. Instead of using the supplied bracket to anchor the wheel unit you drill a hole to recess the drive motor. That anchors the unit to the pedestal. Do a nice job cutting and finish the hole with a rubber/vinyl molding and you're good to go. Works fine and looks "built in". You only need enough clearance behind the wheel for the wheel ring, maybe an inch or so. Dwain

Pre-installed?

Steve, the 40.5's were pre-engineered for a Raytheon electric drive motor. There was a drilled mounting plate. At least I think so since there is another one with a 4000 on it and the plate is there. Why the guy put a 4000 on a 20,000 LB 40' boat is beyond cheap, of course. Maybe there is someone old enough at Hunter to remember?
