We are considering an autopilot for our 26X. Does any one have one? What success in using it? Was any modification to the boat required to attach it?

Auto Pilot add on

Havencraft dealer I saw was offering a auto pilot option, I am a little concerned about using a auto pilot, my steering is some what tight and seems restricted on the 2001 26x. You might call the dealer and ask them how it works as far as holding course and the model they use. If I recall this was a 800.00 feature, I am sure one could install it . not much help other than that. I also remeber a web site about a guy and his wife in BC Canada adding a auto pilot for a trip to Alaska, he also would be a good source, I think his name was Norm, surf the mac sites on the web, you will see his, sorry I do not have a link, use key works Alaska macgregor 26x It think it will pop up. Autopilot

Mark: THanks for the input. WIll try to find Norm on the web. Steering on our 26X (97 model is occasionally stiff, but after use frees up. Slop in the rudder attachments may make hte autopilot "hunt" around but willing to give it a try.

Auto Pilot

I installed an "Autohelm SportPilot Plus" by Raytheon. It's rated for boats over 25 feet, installs behind the wheel. I use it most of the time with the motor locked in the center position and only the rudders steering, this lightens the load and uses less power. This is without a doubt the best mod I've added, since I single hand sail its used alot without a problem.

Autopilot - Raytheon Sportpilot Plus

Paul, I just purchased a Sportpilot Plus. Where did you place the fluxgate compass? Thanks, Frank

Auto Pilot Fluxgate compass

Frank, I mounted the compass just below the cockpit seat, in the rear port berth area. As you face the stern (for the inside)I put the compass on the flat surface on the bottom left corner, its out of the way and is only 12" off the centerline. Just run the cable down thru the console floor and your set, I've had no troubles it works great. Paul
