Autopilot Drive Unit Replacement

A friend of mine would like to replace the belt driven unit on his old Autohelm 3000 autopilot with the integral wheel ring type unit removed from an old Autohelm 4000 autopilot without replacing the control unit. Does anyone know if that is possible or know of anyone who has done that?

Raymarine says OK

I queried Raymarine on this subject and they said that the motors in the two systems are "very similar in specification". They cautioned that the size of the boat should still be limited to the size recommended for the control unit since it is what supplies the current for load applied.

does any one have a owners manual for a auto helm 4000 the old one if so drop me a line a seadogocoee@aol.com thanks for any help
