Autopilot Cable Routing

I have a 1992 H28 and am installing a Raymarine 4000 wheel mounted autopilot. My pedestal guard does not go all the way to the deck. How have others routed the motor cable to the control head? Did you go inside the pedestal and follow the throttle and shifter cables or did you mount it on the outside of the pedestal? I would like a clean looking installation that will not cause chafe on the wires. Any suggestions or ideas from people who have done this before or who are familier with the Edson round-base pedestal would be helpful.

Through the pedestal.

I have a Simrad but the wiring should be similar. I drilled a 1/4" hole for the only wire in the back(forward facing) side of the pedestal. The hole size was selected after I found the proper rubber grommet at Lowes. The hole is just below the bands that hold the unit to the Edson. I dropped in a small bolt attached to a string. Then I reached up through the base with one of those magnets on a "stick". The holes in the base are large enough to position the wire where it will not chafe. But you need to secure it some way. The wire is hidden by the fold down cockpit table. But even without the table there is little that is noticeable.

Hi Steve, installed the ST4000 on our H28...

Ran the wires from the head mounted on the starboard side coaming through the starboard cockpit locker and starboard lazarette locker using existing wire routes. Then along the quadrant well and up through the pedestal using the same route as the throttle and shifting cables. Turned out to be a nice install. I had to unbolt the pedestal from the cockpit sole and loosen the steering cables from the quadrant in order to get enough room to work. Terry
