Automotive vs Marine parts

Does anyone know if Motorola has a particular part number that identifies a marine part vs an automotive part? I have a Motorola alternator installed on my Atomic 4 engine. It has a data plate that says Automotive Parts Products and the Model number begins with MR and there is another line that says Type B. I wondered if MR was a code for Marine or is Type B? This alternator is listed in everything I have in historical records on the engine dating back to the original owner in 1977, but the surveyor looked at the data plate, where it says Motorola Automotive Products and said it had to be changed. Any help identifying it would be helpful. I have a replacement part but when I started to replace it I noticed the Model number and got curious.

parts is parts

hello mark, i don't know for motorola but many aircraft alternators are automobile parts that have only had a change of the data plate, and this jacks the price up five hundred percent. john

automotive v. marine parts

Mark; marine parts are not the same as automotive. Since you have an Atomic 4, a GASOLINE engine, your alternator must be IGNITION PROTECTED and sparkproof. Also, automotive alts. are not built to the same level of corrosion resistance and are not as heavy duty as a real marine alternator. Using an automotive alternator in a boat is asking for trouble.
