I am unable to access our boat to measure the engine compartment and I need to purchase an automatic fire extinguisher. Would anyone happen to know the measurements so that I could determine the correct size of extinguisher? Our boat has a 13 hp Yanmar 2GM, if that makes a differnce. What kind of extinguishers do other boaters have? Thanks for your help. Scott

Automatic Fire Extinguishers

Scott, As far as I know (working in fire protection and suppression for 20 odd years) USCG regs do not address automatic extinguishers for a diesel powered vessel your size. I haven't checked recently but most likely the standard portable ones would be adequate. There are some neat innovations in automatic extinguishers one is FireTrace which overcomes the problem of where and which direction to place the nozzles which is often done by best guess. LandRover uses a similar system and they can be seen on trucks. On foam extinguishant my opinion is the area doesn't have to be enclosed, Ansul systems are extremely effective in suppressing an open range fire in a restaurant but a real pain to clean afterwards. Hope this is helpful, Alan

West Marine MA2 50 cubic feet?

Assuming my engine is the same approximate size as that of Ed's H37C, I get 25.7 cubic feet of space. The West Marine MA2 - 50 cubic foot size model should do the job. I am required to do this as a condition of insurance. Thank-you.

Matter of insurance ? Question your broker !

Scott, I have been boating all my life and have now passed the big 6! My current H34 is my 9th boat. I'll concur with Ed and Alan. Never in my life have I ever heard anything like that for a boat like yours with a diesel engine! And I have had boats in Canada and in the USA ! Before going the expense and trouble, I would seriously call my insurance broker and check around with other boaters in your area. Good luck

I agree with Claude in that you are NOT

required to have any type of "automatic" fire suppression device installed. You are required to have a certain amount (and type) of portable extinguishers. Check out the Coast Guard regulation page attached. I'd check with your insurance broker. No insurance company I'm aware of requires any built in automatic system in our type of boat.
