Help/advice needed: Can anyone give an absolute recommendation for an automatic bilge pump preferaby with a separate failsafe switch? Why do these fail after a relatively short period of time (17 Months?). There appears to be no preventative maintenance as they all are 'sealed units' Grateful for any advice

Electricity and salt water

When electrical devices operate in salt water the life expectency is probably not going to be that great no matter how well they are built. Rust never sleeps and highly motivated electricaly activated rust is a wonder to behold. The best solution is to do the things you need to do to ensure you have a dry bilge or, if that is not practical, keep the salt water diluted with a regular spray down with the hose.

I have seen boats that run 2 pumps

and 2 switches in parallel for redundancy. Check them periodically and you should be good to go.
