Automatic bilge pump woes

Upon launching our 40' Caliber sailboat after winter storage, noted that the bilge pump switch was not functioning. Pump was working when you pressed the lever for manual operation. We replaced the switch. It worked for a while. Two weeks later, the switch failed again. Looked like one of the hoses was interfering with the rising and falling of the float. Seemed that the plastic tie holding the hose away popped. So we bought new ties and fastened the hose away. It worked for a while. Now, thw switch again does not rise and fall automatically, does so manually. And, when there is water in the bilge the "on" light flickers. The pump works manually. Wires seem tight. Also, as you can imagine, the switch is deep in the bilge and very difficult to reach (of course). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

B.P. Switches

Float Switches are notoriously unreliable, and have contributed greatly to my economic well-being over the years. A better Bilge Pump Switch is the: ULTRA-PUMPSWITCH #WPS-01-12V at about $90. Regards, Gord

A better Switch

Thanks for the info, we will definitely check that out. Our arms are already 2 inches longer from reaching down to the switch which I'm sure you know is in a most accessible place deep in the bottom of the bilge.
