Has anyone installed an automatic bilge pump? Thinking of using the thru-hull where the deck discharges, installing a tee and maybe a check valve

Bilge pump

It is possible to install an automatic bilge pump in an H22. Others that frequent this board have done it and so have I. There's really only one spot for it and it's under the deck plate at the foot of the companionway ladder. Only the smallest rule pumps will fit. As far as the pump discharge goes, I suppose you could use a check valve along with the deck discharge thru-hull. Personally I routed mine from the pump to under and into the starboard quarter berth access and out the back of that to a seperate thru-hull. Which ever way you go with the discharge you'll need to make all your electrical and plumbing connections prior to putting into the bilge. And for mounting the pump and switch, I simply used 3M 5200 adhesive caulk to secure it all into the bilge.

temp set up

I installed a West Marine 12v bilge pump (model550) in my 1982 H22. I mounted the pump on a small metal plate and set it in the small bilge access area just forward of the battery. (made a custom cover w/ cutout) I am a bit timid about drilling a hole in the hull, but in the mean time have run the drain hose aft, up and out the access hole where the fuel tanksits. Now I have to remember to charge the batt before the next hurricane! (maybe get a small solar panel) Eric
