In the Autohelm ST 4000 book the 1-13 calibration settings go 1. Rudder gain 2. Rudder offset 3. Rudder limit etc. On the list I have received from several ST4000 owners have the settings as 1. rudder gain 2. response: is response the same as rudder offset? I got the rest figured out/

You have to set it every time you fire it up?
You know, if the people who are responsible for designing these products had to use them - IN THE FIELD, preferable with their butts on the line - there wouldn't be these lame gliches.

No you don't have to set it every time. Only need to calibrated once when install. The unit keeps the setting.

Response is how rapid the autopilot reacts to heading changes. It affects electrical use. Higher setting (5 and above) will steer a very straight line but use more juice.

The default is 5 which is good for general use especially motor-sailing. When sailing I change them to 2 once the boat settle down to the course. You can press -1 and +1 together to temporary change the setting. Once power off, it goes back to the default but you can change the default by going into calibrate mode.

Not sure if the "learn" mode is available on the ST4000. The new unit has "self-learn" which is really nice.

The unit will guide you to steer a zig-zag course for a few minutes on flat water. After that, it'll tell you everything has been set. And it does work perfectly.

Do these things have a battery backup for memory when powered off? I have one on my boat that sat on the hard for many years. This year I want to play with it. I tried last season once and it tracked straight for a while then did a 360°. It also read 213° all the time. I haven't traced the wiring but it may have been attached to a KVH Quadro or a Raymarine RL70. The Quadro isn't functioning and the RL70/radar system has been replaced with a C70/RD218 set up. I downloaded the manual and was going to calibrate it when I launch hopefully soon.

To do lists! :cussing:
