I am considering upgrading the controls and compass for an autohelm 5000. The linear drive that I currently have has a control board inside of the linear drive, a 7 pin connector that goes to the control head, and two power leads that connect to the control board inside the drive. It is a pre-type 1 or 2 drive.

Does anyone know if the newer type 1 or 2 autohelm / raymarine linear drives use a circuit board inside the drive unit or do the four leads go directly to the motor and clutch?

Any ideas on the compatibility of the newer controls with the 5000 linear drive?

Thanks for any help or ideas,
Dan

I am pretty sure the new ones do not. The new systems put the "computer" inside the cabin called the "Control Box". The drive gets it's power and commands from the control box. The drive is just a plain motor.

The Autohelm 5000 has been obsolete for about 10 years.

The Linear drive used with the AH5000 is not compatible with any Raymarine course computers (new or old). Sorry, but Ive been there too.
