autohelm interface

I want to interface my autohelm 4000 to gps. The GPS has ground, live,serial in, and serial out. The autohelm has the same. Are they suggesting to hook GPS serial out to autohelm serial in, or is the autohelm wanting me to match out to out and the wiring inside has taken this into consideration?
