Autohelm fluxgate compass location

I have purchased a used Autohelm ST4000 autopilot (1996). The install instructions was vague on the best location for the fluxgate compass. Also where is your control head located. The pedastal seems too close to the compass, but under the dodger seems too far ??Any C-30 owners have suggestions??Thanks!

my 4000 autohelm is locate4d as follows. the flux gate is on the screwed in the fibergloass depression of the cockpit as you see it when you remove the bank of drawers on the icebox side. run the wire from there to the pedestal and install the control at the pedestal. mine works great and that is the location.

Where I Put Mine

I installed my fluxgate compass in the forward end of the bilge on the compression post support footing. It's low and doesn't move much as the boat heels which improves the accuracy. It works fine. I mounted the control unit on the aft starboard cockpit seat back. That way I can reach it to set it from the helm. I also have the remote control and mounted the socket for it's plug inside the starbord coaming box so that it would be out of the weather.
