Autohelm 4000

What is the difference between the Autohelm ST 4000 and the ST 4000+? Is there a way to upgrade from the 4000 to the 4000+? I have the unit installed on a 1988 Catalina 30 with wheel steering. Thanks.

Control head

I believe the upgrade involves replacing the control head which contains the computer stuff that make the autopilot auto. Not a cheap upgrade.

ST4000+ has a slightly different drive motor

also. I just replaced a malfunctioning 10 YO st4000 autohelm with the new one. The price difference between upgrade and full deal is about $200, about the price of a fluxgate so I just went with the whole deal. Got it from www.sailnet.net think they are having sale on them again.

You can get the bits

I replaced the control head some time ago and sold the old one on eBay. Still have the original motor drive. May replace that too. It's rated for a heavier boat than the ST4000. I think I got a price of $400 or so for the drive alone.

The plus

The plus does not requre a seperate interface box to link the gps to the autopilot for using the "track mode".
