I am considering purchasing auto pilot for my O'Day 28 either Autohelm 4000 or wheel Pilot 30. What experence has anyone had and which would you recommend. I am using it for a trip to the Bahamas. Thanks
The Simrad WP30 is a simpler installation. The advantage of having everything in a single unit makes it a nice package. The price is about the same $950-1000 for both units. If you do not need to interface with the GPS you can save a couple of hundred. The performance on both units is about the same. With the advent of Rayethon selling off the marine division I think I would look at the Simrad.
I have one on my Hunter 37 which displaces over 18000. Not having to find a place for a separate fluxgate and run wiring was a small consideration. And some like the separate Raytheon display. But I was more concerned that the A4000 was rated about 4000 less displacement. I'm not sure about Steve's GPS comment. My GPS connects to my WP30. The only hard installation task was fishing the wiring down through the pedestal.
Ed:I was refering to the WP10. It does not have the interface for the NEMA interfaces. This is just the thing for someone that does not want or need that feature. The WP30 has the NEMA interface included.
