AUTOHELM 4000 installation

I'm thinking of buying a 4000 for my 1980 30' O'Day.How difficult is installation? What is best position for flux gate compass?

Smaller Pilot instead?

Have you looked at the Simrad wheel pilots? They mount right on the wheel and for the 30 you should be able to use the WP10 for about $800 instead of the larger boat 4000 or the Smrad WP30
