I am looking at adding an Auto Helm for my 272 with a tiller. Can any other sailers make suggestions as to make and othe rinfo that would be helpful? Cahrlie

Raymarine ST 1000 plus

I have seen this perform on a 27 footer a few years ago and am impressed.. So much that I plan to install one on my 222 O'day. Yesterday I measured my tiller to cockpit cowl to see if I'll need an extension. The one I saw was an early model and seemed kinda beat up but it worked perfectly. From what I have read they come to mount on the starboard side but can me mounted on the port side and then just reprogram the unit for port. My outboard kicker is mounted on the port side and so that's where I sit and it would be nice to have the tiller pilot across from me. ST 2000

I wouldn't recommend an ST 1000 for a 27' boat. The 1000 is rated for boats up to 5000 lbs displacement. My O'Day 25 was so close to that, I decided to go up to the ST 2000 (rated for 10,000 lbs). I think it's great. Many times my wife and I will go for a late night cruise, and let it steer us all the way to the end of the lake.
