Auto pilot troubles

I have an Autohelm 4000 wheel autopilot in my Catalina 28. Since new it has given me fits. Seems to like to turn 90 degrees to port when ever it feels like it. Also the compass readings are totally different than my ships compass, handbearing, and GPS on certain headings. I have done all of the recalibrating etc. Have contacted the manufacture etc. Recently the pin that hold the engagement lever in place sheared. I took it to the Factory authorized service center for repair. the cahrged me 42 cents for the part and $35 for 5 min labor. I left on a cruise and with in 30 minutes it had broken again. Now to get to the point. I've had it with Autohelm. A friend bought a X brand from West Marine when they told him it used a lot less power and they get half the returns. Another friend has a new unit and is on the 5th control head in less that one year!! Anyway. Does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement unit? If I am going to spend another grand, I'd like to get it right this time. Looking forward to some help!!

Navico?

I've heard folks say good things about Navico though I don't have any personal experience. I do have experience with Autohelm though. I hate to say that I agree with you & I would never buy one of their products, not necessarily because of quality but because of their customer service. Raytheon bought them and they are the rudest bunch of creeps I've come across in the marine industry (see how I qualified that? ;-)). LaDonna

Terry...

I'm just now getting ready to buy this very unit but you comments (and LaDonna's) make me pause. I have no suggestions for you but would like to find out more about X Brand. If you don't want to post a reply here, my email is jmavrovich@aol.co. Thanks.

Navico?

LaDonna, I am hearing good things about Navico. During our recent cruise, St Helens to Hood river is where mine failed the last time. One other boat with us had a autohelm 4000 and it would not steer his boat in the following wave above the dam at Cascade Locks. another boat, a C 320 had a navico and it steered perfectly! Maybe we will meet if you go on the Sept cruise. I have not joined Columbia River group yet, however plan to. Plan to go on the cruise!

Meeting

Would love to but they always seem to conflict with other things. We live near Springfield so it take a bit to go up there. when we go to the boat it is for a week or longer at a time. We sail a C-28, Amazing Grace, that says Winchester Bay on the stern. We moved her to the Columbia in April. We have the cruise on our calendars!
