I recently purchased an '88 Catalina 30' and want to get auto pilot/steering to assist with coastal trips to Catalina. The boat doesn't have GPS. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.
Recently replaced 10 YO with new ST 4000 wheelpilot on C270. In large swells on certain headings I and others have noted that these units will S steer, kind of overcompensating a lot. Go with the Raymarine ST4000. Then add your GPS and connect to two units. Plot your course on the GPS, and let go...but keep your eyes open for any changes in wind and/or seas conditions.
