I have a 1987 37' Hunter Legend. I am looking to purchase an autopilot. It appears that there is no room to install a below deck autopilot. Can any one please advise me if they have installed a below deck unit and how. I know I can purchase a wheelpilot. I am concern if the wheelpilot will be able to handle the load. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank You!!!

Wheelpilot - Yes

I also have a 1987 Hunter 37 and installed the Simrad WP-30 and am satisfied with its operation. IT IS at the upper limit of the wheelpilots capacity and when I notice a heavy strain on the wheel, I do turn it off - but for 95% of your day sailin needs the unit is suitable. Agree with Roger.

My H37C is over 18000# and the WP30 handles it without problems. I would still opt for a direct-attached if money were not an object. Are you sure there is no room? Plenty of room on an H37C.

Outer limits

I hae been told by Raymarine that our ST-4000 wheel autopilot is undersized for our 16,000 lb. O'Day 37. And indeed, arious bits hae had to be replaced. Fully loaded, the boat probably tops out at 18,000 lbs. No doubt an underdeck direct connect auto would be better, but it's big bucks! Meanwhile, Raymarine has come out with a beefed up ersion of the ST-4000 that I think would do for any boat up to 18,000 lbs.
