Gentlemen: I am looking to purchase an Auto Helm for my 1992, 28" Catalina sail boat. I basically want to use the Auto Helm when I am sailing single handed to put my mainsail up or to leave the helm for a brief monemt to attend to anything. Can you recommend a reasonably priced Auto Helm that could meet my needs. I would entertain a pre-owned one if anyone is upgrading. Thanks for your advice, Tony

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Raymarine

I have a Catalina 30 MKII that is a 1990. I single hand most of the time and when I am not single handing I don't have a crew who knows much about sailing. I have a Raymarine S1 Autopilot. It was a job to put in because of the rudder sensor but I love the unit. I was able to sail my boat, the other day, upwind in 15 knots of wind, gusts to 20, and waves 3-4 feet and keep the boat under the autohelm. It worked great. I spend a lot of time with the boat on autopilot because of the arrangement that I have. No qualms. The new unit that Raymarine is coming out with doesn't have a rudder sensor. That may be a much easier unit to install but I don't know anything about the new unit. If you are interested in the S1 I can show you the modifications that I had to make to the rudder quadrant housing to get the rudder sensor in there (not sure if the Catalina 28 is similar to the 30 in the rudder set up).

I just bought a Raymarine S1

Cause the new Raymarine X-5 is not going to show up till at least 2nd or 3rd week in July (it was supposed to be April then June)and as BO pointed out the biggest problem is installing the rudder sensor. Todays project after work was designing a couple of alum. plates to install mine to the steering quadrent,I'm very lucky to have a lot of room to work on it As far as price its about a grand for new and for a used one I've never seen any thing on EBay and I'm an EBay junkie needing rehab soon

Hunter 35.5 White Rock
Used ST 4000

Tony, I am in the process of installing the S1 and taking out my ST 4000. I removed the old 4000 as it worked intermitently and I tried several times to fix it without success. I am not very adept at electronics repair. While in the process of repair I did find a couple of connectors that were corroded and failed when I was pulling out the old wires. The ST 4000 did not have a rudder sensor but is complete with the wheel drive, control head, fluxgate compass and all the manuals. If you or someone else on the site want to take a chance on it you can make me an offer. (no promises - no warranty) The unit was originally installed on a 1992 Hunter 35.5. Regards Don
