It would have been better if they used a pair of shackles, sized to the wire blocks, one on each block connecting to the ring, instead of trying to put the two blocks on one shackle. Not that it would perform differently, but it's kind of sloppy rigging. At the risk of offending you. :neutral:
Split backstay adjuster
You could clean it up a bit by replacing the top shackle with two smaller ones, one for each block....then replace the large ring with a smaller one.
Not sure what "history" exists. There are units made that eliminate the little blocks. Google "split backstay adjuster" for lots more info.
