You might be better off flying to Providence which is closer to Attleboro as is Newport compared with anyplace around Boston. There are a few charter companies in Newport.

Attleboro Ma., is very close to the coastal areas of Rhode Island than the Cape Cod area Kevin. You'd love Bristol RI. There's a great seafood restaurant there near the Independence Park boardwalk called "Quito's" which overlooks Bristol Harbor.

Do you have any time on Saturday morning? If so, a vist to D&R MArine in Assonet, MA is worth it (Assonet is about 39-45 minutes from Attleboro and on the way to Newport). The next exit south off Rt 24 from D&R is Airport Rd in Fall River, that was where the last O'DAY Factory was located. Closer ot Newport is Portsmouth, RI where PEARSON YACHTS factory was, they actually built some of the last O'DAYs after buying some of the molds.

I grew up in Attleboro, now live in Plainville, but my boat (1979 DS II) is moored in Wareham. I'm trying to think if there are any charter boats in the Wareham / Marion / Buzzards Bay area....... Buzzards Bay and Cape Cod are only about 50 minutes from Attleboro, going south down Rt 495, or about 60 minutes if you take Rt 195 through Swansea (all this depends on where in Attleboro you will be). Are you staying in Attleboro? Or is your hotel elsewhere?

As Joe mentioned, Narragansett Bay is closer to the South end of Attleboro, Barrington, RI or Warren, RI are maybe 30 minutes or less, Providence and Cranston are about 35-40 minutes south on Rt 95. Warwick and East Greenwich are about 45-50 minutes. East Greenwich is a sailing town, as are Bristol, Barrington, and Newport.

I then drove to Newport. It was super busy. I would love to get on one of those 12 meter boats. I think I want to go back this Friday and do that. I'll also try to swing by D&R.

I'm staying in Seekonk...so it's not too bad of a drive. This is a great area....of course for the last 2 days, I only seen the inside of the Attleboro YMCA.

Looking across Bristol Harbor, you can see Prudence Island. I usually sail over to a cove called Potter's Cove which is West of the Harbor entrance. It's such a beautiful area. It takes me many hours to sail there from the Taunton River in North Dighton, but it's well worth it.
Capt'n Nat Herreshoff sailed these same waters at the turn of the last century. The Herreshoff Museum is well worth the visit in Bristol.

I was just in to see Rudy yesterday. I had pulled my boat out of the water early in the morning and trailered it to his store. I backed my trailer right up to the door of his store. I needed a part for my boat and was able to get it from him. The boat is at my house right now for some needed repair. If everything goes right, I should have her splashed again sometime next week.

Joe, you know..... if you lowered the mast you could ALMOST.... have come by water to visit Rudy! There is just the one bridge where Rt 24 crosses the Assonet River. <GRIN!!> We ran our little 14' powerboat up there one Sunday afternoon a few years back, it was fun..... but not sure how much water there really is (depth) above that bridge.

Years ago Rod, I put my kayak in that river at the park on Water Street and paddled toward the Taunton River. When I got back it was dead low tide and there wasn't enough water to float my kayak on the other side of that ramp heading toward Route 79. I was hitting bottom and couldn't go up river.
I do remember motoring into Assonet Bay with my boat years ago on a high tide. Also, years ago I remember taking my boat all the way to the Weir Village in Taunton to attend the Weir Waterfront Festival. I had to drop my mast to get under the Berkley Bridge. It was fun but the river is so narrow when you get into Taunton. It can't be more than 80' wide in some areas down near the Weir. We anchored in the river next to the park and watched the festival that year.

Hard to believe that at one time (as recently as late 1970s!) there was a boatyard virtually in downtown Taunton, known as GREY'S BOATYARD, they regularly stored powerboats as large as 40'+. Last time I was in htat neighborhood (back in around 1983 or so), the yard (along with several Classic old boats, was gone and they were building condos. I'll have to ask my Dad if he remembers better where the place was. Of course, in those days..... the Berkley / Dighton bridge actually opened! I think Shaws has more or less become the home of some boats that used to store at Greys...... those that are still around! Amazingly..... boats stored at Greys came all hte way up there from Wareham and other Buzzards Bay harbors, and I have 3 friends that now store at Shaws, 2 from Mattapoisett (52' and 40-something foot catamarans) and one from Fairhaven (37' Tartan). The owner of that 52' catamaran lives in Rehoboth, and so Shaws is real conveinent.

I remember Grey's Boatyard as a kid growing up. I also remember talking to Albert Grey at the boatyard years ago about a boat project that I was working on.
