...Catalina this weekend if the weather holds. If you are there, swing by and say hello. I think there will be a couple of other HOW folks there too. Rick D.

Avalon or Two Harbors?

Are you guys headed to Avalon or Two Harbors? I get to go down to CA for a long weekend, and may actually get to Two Harbors if the weather's good. (Otherwise, it's just anchoring in Newport Beach for a couple of days).

...is the plan now. It's a nice place this time of year and we might actually get moorings too. Two Harbors the rest of the time. RD

Moorings

Hey Paul, if you get tired of anchoring at Newport, the mooring fee is only $5 a night. And last time I was down there, the Harbor Patrol told me that they have never run out of moorings.

Avalon & SBO Burgees & Stuff

We went to Avalon over the weekend and it was a great trip. Beautiful trip with snow-covered mountains aft and green island hills on the bow. The usual rule is not to go to Catalina if you can see it (Santa Ana winds) but in this case the winds abated the day before. Anyhow, there were a bunch of Hunters there but I didn't know if there were any HOW participants, so it is a good case to buy and fly the SBO burgee when it's available. It was COLD at night, but shorts during the day. I have an ORIGO alcohol heater aboard that I used to knock off the chill; so glad! Nice seeing the town when it's not over run with turistas. They have sandbagged several blocks out of concern for flooding following the wildfire this last year, but so far, no problem. Doesn't look like a big housing fall there. Two bedroom, one bath seventy year-old rental property 800 SQ FT $799K. (Hamilton Cove condos about the same but much nicer so maybe a bad example). Usual problems with dinghy docks. Most are removed and those there are all filled up with local's boats leaving little room for boater's dinghies, and an 'incentive' to use the shore boats (same situation as always). Lots of sailboats with way-away ports of call, probably transiting. Mostly power boats though, despite some impressive fuel costs. Karl couldn't make it since he lost a headstay when the pin backed out after the cotter pin broke on his 40.5. Fortunately, he was powering in nil air and managed to save the mast by taking a halyard to the rail. (I checked mine as soon as I got off the phone with him!) I really got some use out of my AIS on this trip since there was a lot of traffic going into and out of the harbors. Anyhow, a nice winter trip I'd encourage you to take if weather is good for you. two lessons learned

I learned two things that day: 1. Never say “what did you do?” in jest to your significant other when you hear a booming noise, and then follow it up with a “Holy S**T!” They seem to take exception to that. 2. Never doubt the power of prayer and all out begging when your mask is cocked aft about 3/4's of an inch off the deck, your masthead is swaying a couple of feet back and forth, your backstay and shrouds are flapping in the wind and you are 12-14 miles from the nearest port.
