Just wanted to let everyone know that my Catalina 22’ sail page is up with the before pictures of the upgrade that is in progress. I will be taking some during and sailing pictures this weekend to add to the page. My first mate and I are going for a short sail and I am going to perform some underwater keel inspections. The bad news is that I do not have an underwater camera, and the water in Lake Pontchartrain is not that clean and clear. Visibility is around three to three and a half feet at best and earplugs are a must. If you are interested you can see what I mean here: http://www.saveourlake.org/waterquality/waterquality.html I will be around the #5 area, Lincoln Beach; the harbor is just to the right of the #4 on the other side of that point. (Which is the airport) So, gather around and no pushing, check out what Catalina 22’ #2113 is looking like these days. http://www.geocities.com/netricks/Sail.html I know that I like to see other pictures of Catalina’s and I hope you enjoy it too. See ya’ll when I get back, Rick

Good start

Nice site, Rick! I'll be checking for updates. As far as polluted waters go, I just moved from Raritan Bay down to the Chesapeake Bay. Raritan Bay had a sewage spill a few months ago, and my section of the Chesapeake Bay had one just about a week ago. We're also having an unprecedented number of fish kills from overabundant algae caused by farm runoff. Great, huh? A few questions about your boat: Are you building a galley from scratch? Your sliding hatch and your forward hatch are blue, and it looks like they might have some sort of cover over them. Is it just paint, or do you have some sort of extra cover on them? I envy your bimini. I notice that you sail with both your bimini and your pop-top up. I've never sailed with the pop-top up. Any problems with that? Is your bimini a Catalina Direct type? I'm shopping around, and just wondering how people like what they've got. Looks like you have some sort of vent or window on your forward hatch. What is it, actually? That's about it. Nice boat. Nice site. One of these days, I'll post a sailing site. I'm a bit embarrassed about the condition of my boat at present, however. Yours looks pretty darned good by comparison! Have fun.

Thanks Rick

Lake Pontchartrain is getting better slowly since they stopped the dredging and curved the runoff. When I was anchored this weekend at the old beach I took the opportunity to brush the Lake Pontchartrain smile off my boat. Visibility was about two and a half feet where I was; standing in about three feet I could not see my feet. I envy those places where the water is so clear, like Miami and the Keys. Yes, I am building the galley from scratch; it is about 75% finished. Basically it is a wood housing to hold a two-burner stove and a sink that mimics the original galley. My boat did not come with one so this is the replacement. I have read the pros and cons of the galley from other sailors but I want a water source to use for utility purposes. I do not want to use fresh bottled water for washing off hands, food, rags, cleaning, brushing teeth, rinsing off, etc. And after a day of sailing, once we are at anchor there needs to be some food preparation started. Sailing makes me hungry. I will post some incomplete galley pictures on my site after I write this so you can see what it looks like. The forward hatch and sliding hatch were blue but very faded. So I painted them both with Brightside ocean blue paint from West Marine. The bimini sits under the boom enough for me to leave it up when sailing, and the pop-top sits under the bimini. No problems sailing that way, but I would like to add the gas shocks to the pop-top just to keep it stiff in the up position. The bimini came with the boat when I bought it, it is a three-bow bimini and the krewe would jump ship without it. I did move it forward a little so that it covers the hatch and most of the cockpit. The object on the forward hatch is my solar trickle charge panel, another West Marine item that works rather well at constantly charging the battery. Thanks again for the complements, I like seeing other peoples boats too. It’s a great source for ideas along with this great forum of support from the sailors around the country. Rick

pop top

I sail with the pop top and bimini up from time to time depending on wind conditions. If it's really breezy I play it safe and keep things battened down, but the bimini is essential in this 100 degree heat. All you need for the pop top to stay up is a small locking clip that fits in the mast slide and catches the lip of the pop top where it meets the mast. I assume you can get one from one of the usual suppliers. I'm gonna look at the photos now. always an opportunity for good ideas. Happy sailing. Jake

What about the vang?

When you sail with the poptop up how do you handle the vang? Do you just go without it? When I put up my poptop I have to detach the vang from the mast step. Randy 13227

Vang

good point - since I'm sailing in light air when the pop top is up, I release the vang and push the line to one side. as long as the ends of the vang are not directly in the way of the pop top, it works out. the vang is useless in this set up, but the pleasure in having the pop top up for those light air days makes it worth it. I should note this in in direct contradiction of the owner's manual which says to never sail with the pop top up. I'm on a big midwestern lake with fairly obvious weather. also, I sail with the bimini up and use the same cautions regarding the wind strength. When it's over 10 mph I tend to be more cautious.

Just got back from a weekend sail on the Bay in Maryland..took the dive gear to clean the bottom and check my keel cable...6" vis...thats right 6 inches...be greatful! I bought the Canon S-30 with the enclosure..took it to 160' feet no probs..great camera..Digital too... Can you take a closeup of both sides of your rudder..I'm haveing problems with mine and need a comparison. Hull # 3084 Mark

Thanks everyone

your compliments make it all worthwhile. This past weekend I did an underwater inspection of the hull and keel and found them to be in reasonably good shape. Mostly covered in algae with a few barnacles here and there. Bottom job is about three years old and holding on well. I expected to see a lot worse, but was satisfied with what I saw. The previous owner did the bottom job, as I have only owned the boat for two and a half years. Once I brushed the algae off the keel hardware I was happy to see the stainless steel still shined. By the way, Lake Pontchartrain is brackish water. Mark, I will take some underwater pictures of the keel and rudder this weekend (hopefully) and post them for you. As far as the boom vang is concerned, I do not own one. My pop-top and bimini outweigh a boom vang as far as necessity goes. And I was not aware that one should not sail with the pop-top up. I do it all the time, but like I said earlier I am going to add gas shocks so it is firm in the up position. When the weather turns on me I lower the pop-top and control the main with the mainsheet, traveler, and outhaul. I also ran the reefing lines to the cockpit so I can reef from there. Actually all my lines run to the cockpit, but they need a little improving. The weather has forced me to drop the bimini once or twice, it takes a beating sometimes. If I am caught in a bad blow on the lake, I will drop both the pop-top and bimini, release the storm anchor (which I am looking to buy or make), and raise the keel. Yes, raise the keel. The lake is only twelve feet deep and with six foot swells…. you do the math. But the good news is they come on you fast and they leave you fast. And in a shallow lake if the boat sinks you can always walk home. Catalina 22’ #2113 Rick

Thanks Rick...

I'm replaceing the hardware on the rudder...waiting on the parts. I'm amazed at how crafty some of the Cat 22 owners are...Check out the Bimini post...great additions on that boat. Darn thing looks brand new.
