I am in the process of mounting Weaver Davit heads on the Transom of our 1992 Hunter Legend 35.5 in order to jave the dinghy out of the water while under way. In order to position the davits in the most effective location, they would be above the water line while at the dock however the would definitely submerge and during saing in swells and or while healing. I am comfortable with the construction of the davit heads and the transom strength but I thought I would solicit feedback and see if I am on the wrong track. I would of course seal the through hull holes and mounting plate with the appropriate caulk in order to (hoefully) make the connection waterproof. Any advice?

weaver davits

I had Weaver davits on my Passage 42 and they were fine at the dock but didn't work well with the dinghy mounted and under sail. The davits were mounted too low and the dinghy tended to drag above 10 degrees of heel. If you're going to tow al the time it would be fine; otherwise be sure to check the clearance while heeling. Also, check the stern light visibility with the dinghy mounted if you plan on being underway and not towing it at night.

There are some problems to consider

I put the Weaver Dinghy Davits on my H380 and there is a posting in the photo section of this web site for you to view. I had a H35.5 and that stern is a little bit narrower. Under sail my 10 foot Avon drags in the water--I probably should have placed the davits a bit higher. Still it is easiest enough to drop the dinghy and tow it if the sailing is that good. Les
