ATTACHING TO MAST OR BOOM

I am planning to add a boom vang to my 1983 23'. What is the preferred method of attachment to the boom. I see both screws and rivets are used for attachment purposes on the mast and boom. I also believe I read something on this site about using screws with larger threads. Could someone please clarify? Thanks for the assistance.

I used a bail

I don't know how nor do I have the equipment to rivet anything, so I used stainless self-tapping screws to affix a bail to the boom on my '79 Oday 23. I used the size screw that was appropriate for the bail. I think you should use the largest screw that fits so you will get the most out of the self-tapping.

Use something to prevent corrosion

Without stepping into the screws vs. rivets debate, I would like to suggest that wherever you join two dissimilar metals (like a stainless steel screw or rivet and an aluminum mast) you apply one of the many products designed to prevent galvanic corrosion. Aluminum is less "noble" than stainless steel and will corrode away where it contacts the fastener, enlarging the hole over time.
