I need to attach a fitting to my mast to keep the jib halyard from wrapping around the forestay when furling my new furler. What is the best way to attach this fitting, pop rivets, self tapping screws or something else?

of your Mast too!

Most (maybe all) furler manufacturers specify the halyard lead angle range necessary for the proper functioning of their furler. Too parallel to the furler, teh halyard wraps. Too sharp an angle, the sail won't hoist or tension properly. They recommend using something to adjust this angle, either a halyard restrainer )basically an eye strap affixed to the front of teh mast below the top sheave) or a pennant (either at the head or the tack (or both) of the sail. As for affixing the restrainer (if that is your choice), you will need to look at a cross section of your mast. Some of them use that portion of the mast to run wires and / or halyards. Whatever you decide to do, you won't want to interfere with this! As for pop rivets or sheet metal screws, I favor pop rivets (316 SS), or machine screws. NOT sheetmetal screws (due to the internal wires and things). Steve Alchemist
