I have a small boat (Hunter 216) and have puchased a whisker pole. Can I attach it to my small headsail at the clew grommet and do I need to use a topping lift line to hold up the pole?

I have been able to get away without a topper or a fore guy. One can effectively use the lazy sheet and the active sheet to keep the pole under control.

Try it

Put the pole up and give it a try. In heavier air you may find a down haul arrangement useful. A topping lift is not hard to rig up.

Try this

Tie a loop of line through the jib clew cringle and attach the outboard end of the pole to that instead of the jib sheet. I learned this trick from folks who gybe their poles a lot, but it would work to keep the pole in one place and not slide down along the jib sheet on any given tack.
