Atomic Four Transmission Slips and Adjustment

Having finished a valve job and new head gaskets (two) in GOOD TRADE's Atomic Four, the motor appeared to have so much torque that the transmission was slipping.

All the books say that there are two adjustments for the slip. One, for forward, is the cogged gear (where ONE notch of adjustment is A LOT of change). The second is the 3/4 inch hex head adjustment for the reverse gear.

I think, there should be a third adjustment written into the manuals. Let's call it the placement of the shifter cable.

I spent a week of freetime squeezing in and out of the sail locker, laying half on top of the fuel tank, pressing my already hair-challenge head against every rough, sharp, or hot edge possible, making adjustments one and two in every possible combination, only to never have the forward and reverse gears work as they should.

But last night, I took two, 2"x3" 3/4" starboard scaps to move the end of the cable 1.5" to starboard, two inched forward and maybe an inch higher. This moved the forward most position of the cable well before the end play of the binacle handle. Then, by making a 1/6 of a turn of the 3/4" adjuster, both forward and reverse now work and hold w/o slipping.

YES! I will post a picture. It is not pretty, it is not with stainless steel screws (today), but it did the job -- well!

If ever you are adjusting your transmision and need an encouraging word or wonder about it, send me a note. I will be glad to assist.

Here are the pics.

In the future, should one search for "transmission" and have a universal atomic four with an integreated transmission and need assistance with the adjustment, please , do not be shy to contact me. Goodness knows, I had A LOT of help from everyone else on this forum.
