I'm not sure if I'm kosher on this site since I'm not yet a Catalina owner but I'm looking to buy a 30 in the near future. The boat I'm looking at now is a 30 with a gasoline engine (I assume Atomic 4). I would prefer the diesel but the boat seems excellent and this is the only drawback I can see at this point. I'm interested in input from Catalina 30 owners regarding this. How concerned should I be with a gas vs. a diesel engine? While I'm at it...the boat will need a new prop. Any suggestions what I should get for it? Thanks.

Try the C30 Assoc website

www.catalina30.com Also, try Moyermarine.com for info on A4 engines, they are one of two or three in the country that are superb on that engine.

I like my Atomic 4.

I hear poeple running down the Atomic 4 but I have to say that I've found mine to be a reliable little trojan. I keep the oil and fuel clean and the batteries in good shape. I spray the 'electrics' with an igniton varnish a couple of times a year to keep any moisture out and I always run the extractor fan before starting, which it always does. It has horse-power to spare when running at 6 knots and I find it very economical on fuel. What more can you ask. Big plus is that if I ever did spill a little fuel inboard during maintenance, any gas smell dissipates in minutes. Diesel lingers forever. Also, with four cylinders, vibration is next to nil. I'm sure that you can find plenty of sad stories about the Atomic 4 out there, but you wont hear one from me.
